Kenny's Classic Rock bootleg collection kenny@sahr.com Some of this is shown on my "rock museum" at http://www.sixtiescollection.com and http://www.woodstockproject.com Last Updated June 2, 2012 ** All shows are soundboard unless otherwise noted! ** Got Spare Silver Disc Bootlegs To Trade? I'll trade 10-1 cdr's for each silver disc. Always willing to hear offers to barter your spare rock'n'roll memorabilia for bootlegs! The Wonders of Music Collecting! ************************** I'll never forget the moment I discovered what bootlegs were in 1998. I thought I'd heard most of the music I'd ever hear of The Who, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. A bunch of studio albums and a few live cd's were all most of us knew about. Unless you were into the original late 60's and 70's LP bootleg scene, you'd have no way of knowing what the cd burner and the Internet were about to do to music. I was living in Houston at the time and walked to a local music store and was amazed to see so many cd's that I'd never heard of in the "imports" section. I bought a few of The Who and The Beatles and ran home. Today we call these "silver disc bootlegs" and no one in their right mind would consider paying $25 per cd. But in the 90's, silver disc bootlegs were the other doorway to this new music. Outtakes of Beatles songs, Pete Townshend demos, complete Who shows - a treasure of music! Thanks to bootlegs, The Beatles released their Anthology series and The Who eventually released a complete Live At Leeds. Today, bands regularly release studio outtakes, demos and live songs as bonus tracks on cd's. The bootleg labels contributed a lot to music by raising our expectations and by causing fans and collectors to ask for and expect more from the big labels. These untouched Who and Led Zeppelin shows are mindblowing. The Who's 1969 and 1970 tours and Led Zeppelin's 1975 tour (US and the UK Earl's Court shows) are, to me, the top of the top of live rock music. The Who played Tommy, My Generation and Naked Eye with such intensity. There are a few excellent soundboard shows - most complete and some partial - of this era. By 1975, Led Zeppelin had quite a repertoire. They played most of these songs in concerts considered long even for the 70's. Most of the bootlegs from that tour are 3-4 cd's. Flying Circus and the Earl's Court shows are the best and I hope they'll be officially released on day. Led Zeppelin took their audience to another planet! I went to every music store in the area and in other cities during that period and bought dozens of bootlegs. The silver disc bootlegs that I bought are featured at http://www.sixtiescollection.com/silverdiscs I bought my first cd burner in December 2000 and since then, I've done literally hundreds of trades. A friend set up a second pc as a "cd ripping machine" to speed things up. It was fun and I learned a lot about sound, music and computers. At the same time, I also bought most of the official albums of the bands that I collect here. If it looks like I have a lot of bootlegs, I have more official cd's than bootlegs. A few years ago, I went through the process of cleaning out bootlegs that I didn't listen to - mostly audience recordings. Everyone is different on this, but for me there's nothing like a soundboard recording. I kept the best audience recordings (like The Who Toronto 1975 which I'd keep even if it wasn't a silver disc!) and gave away boxes and boxes of cd's. This is why I can't take every trade that comes my way. My collection is "tighter" now - 99% of the shows here are excellent sounding A+ quality to my ears. I take my collection seriously but keep it fun. Enjoy looking at my bootleg collection.. :) ----- First The Who, then The Beatles, Pink Floyd and then all the rest with World Music at the bottom! Cottonbowl. 2 cds. Full show of above. From Tape City, January 2010. Where Are The Kids. One cd of the above. 1996 The Who came back in 96-97 to do 'redo' Quadrophenia. The original 1973 tour was great, but the technology of the day made it harder to do (see Tales From The Who). These Quadrophenia shows have other musicians adding a good touch - like Phil Daniels (the star, Jimmy, of the original movie Quadrophenia), Billy Idol and others. Each show is a bit different and they succeed in communicating the message with the dialogue and music. Hyde Park, London. June 29, 1996. Stuff from 1969 and 1970, including Tommy at SUNY. My Generation. Pirate version of My Generation remastered by the bootlegger with 10 bonus tracks. Because of a dispute between The Who and the first person who signed them, this is the only Who cd not yet remastered for cd. It'll finally be done in 2002 - took them this long to agree! From Lifehouse To Leeds. One of the original Who bootleg albums from the 70's. Lifehouse outtakes + Live at Leeds. (Lifehouse = Who's Next) Pure Rock Theatre. Like Dream of 69, shows from the same era. Who Zoo Two! This one was also an album bootleg in the 70's. Has Townshend doing a commercial for the US Air Force! Outtakes from 1965-1969. And an alternate vocal of a Tommy song. Life With The Moons - Upgrades From The Boxed Set. A bootleg answer to the box set! The best of the compilations by far. Has Keith and Pete comedy and outtakes. Also Daltrey and Pete joking before Behind Blue Eyes. The record publishers wouldn't dare release something this good! Maximum BBC. Till Live at the BBC came out in 2000, this was the only way to hear this! Who at the BBC - its live, but in a BBC studio so has a cool feel to it. 60's to early 70's. Greatest Hits Live. Their greatest hits from various shows. Higher Education. Some Georgetown 1969 + *unreleased* Townshend demos. Maximum Live Rarities - Lots of live from various shows. From Pete's Diaries (website stuff). 2 cds. Live 2000. Compilation from Pete's site. 2 cds. Ghost Songs. 2 cds. Live solo of Daltrey, Townshend and Entwistle + Townshend demos and outtakes. Roger Daltrey, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney on Howard Stern!! 2 cds. Pete Townshend - Behind Chinese Eyes. Chinese Eyes demos. Includes Face Dances Part 2 with extra verse! Who's Next Sessions - Who's Next demos and outtakes. From The Trader's Den. Demos ----- If you're a Who fan, these are gifts from the gods. Townshend plays everything. It shows how he really knew how the end result would end up. He shows the bassist, drummer and vocalist how their part should sound with incredible detail. If you like these, buy Townshend's Scoop series (which has lots of stuff not here). Its worth it, if only to support one of the few musicians with demos good enough to be released. The Punk Meets The Godfather. Quadrophenia demos. Lifehouse and Quadrophenia Demos. 2 cds. Complete. Till Pete's Lifehouse Chonricles came out in 2000, this was the only place for Lifehouse/Who's Next demos. Quadrophenia demos still have not been officially released (besides a few on Scoop). New Years Eve. Most of Tommy demos + 2 live songs from The Lulu Show, December 31, 1970. Early performances of Naked Eye and I Don't Even Know Myself. Its Face Demos. Face Dances and Its Hard demos + a few that were never released. Music Must Change. Who Are You demos. If you like Townshend with keyboard and guitar, this is the best. My favorite of the demos. Has Baba O'Riley synthesizer demo at the end as a bonus. The Tommy Demos. You can see what Townshend originally wrote - and how little it changed! A masterpiece, what can you say? I bet they release this one day. Tommy Rarities. Another version of The Tommy Demos. Home Grown Rarities - A few demos I'd never heard! ------ The Beatles - http://www.bootlegzone.com Abbey Road Companion. Cover has the boys walking across Abbey Road from the other side! Glad I have both - the below has different takes. The Acoustic Submarine. 2 cds. Across The Universe - Oil Well - Various outtakes. But *not* March 3, 1964, Sheffield as the disc says. Most of these songs weren't even written then! Alternate Abbey Road. One of my favorites. Alternate Hey Jude. Yes! I waited a long time to hear different outtakes of Hey Jude (and other songs). Beatle Versions Of Solo Beatles Songs And More - Polyphone - Rough recordings of The Beatles playing what later became solo songs of the band members. It was cool hearing Back Seat Of My Car, a favorite McCartney song. The songs are mostly from the Get Back sessions. Obscure and for completists only. Candlestick Park, San Fran. Aug 28, 1966. Upgraded from Purple Chick's The Beatles Live 11 - The Last Tour. From Hunger City, February 2009. Complete Christmas Collection 1963-1969. This is what they did in those days! Every year, a short Chistmas record came out with a voice message and a song - mainly for the fan club. Two disc Vigotone version is from HungerCity, February 2010. Complete Hollywood Bowl Concerts. August 23, 1964 and August 29 and 30, 1965. 2 cds. From HungerCity, February 2010. Complete Rooftop Concert. January 30, 1969. Last time The Beatles played live together! From HungerCity, February 2010. Euphoria In Australia - Document Records - Adelaide, June 12, 1966 and Melbourne, July 1st, 1964 (though its really June 17, 1964). Great document of The Beatles in Australia! Original silver disc. Its All In The Mind You Know. Outtakes, commercials and more! Groovy version of Lucy with "Jeremy" (the Nowhere Man) singing a new verse. Original silver disc. Last Night in Hamburg. The 1962 Star Club show. This show was the subject of a few court cases from the 70's to the 90's. The Beatles just didn't want this show released. Why? This is as close to "the moment before they became big" as possible. They owed the Star Club one more show and they did it. Live In Paris. June 20, 1965. Upgraded from Purple Chick's The Beatles Live 07 - Les Beatles en Europe, from Hunger City. Live In Paris 1965 - Azir Records - June 20, 1965 (and not August 1 as listed - that's the date it was broadcast on British TV!). Clone of Swinging Pig version. Awesome performance and funny to hear Paul struggling with his (then) awful French! Lost Pepperland Reel. Read about it - a great cd. From HungerCity, February 2010. Magical Mystery Demos. As good as it sounds. Has 'Jeremy' from Yellow Submarine singing a new verse to Lucy in the Sky, promo for the a few movies and more. Secret Songs In Pepperland. Silver disc. Has the Pepperland reel (same as Lost Pepperland Reel) and Sgt. Pepper in mono. Sessions. Silver disc of studio outtakes. Flows well but most are on Anthology series. The Ed Sullivan Shows. Every Beatles performance on Ed Sullivan throughout the 60's. 2 cds. Its history, not just music! This is where it all began, and this lets you hear how The Beatles maintained a relationship with Ed Sullivan every year -- all the way to Let It Be. Ticket To Ride - Back Trax - Stockholm, October 24, 1963 and Paris, June 20, 1965. Original silver disc. Crazy Shows - Stockholm, Sweden - October 24, 1963 / Shindig, October 3, 1964 / Ed Sullivan Show, August 14, 1965 and NME Pollwinners, April 11, 1965. Original silver disc. Tokyo 66.06.30 / Tokyo 66.07.01 - Upgraded from Purple Chick's The Beatles Live 10 - Far East Men in February 2009, from Hunger City. The Live Beatles - Bulldog Records - Tokyo, July 2, 1966 (its really June 30, 1966). Original silver disc. I compared this and the below show to Purple Chick's Tokyo bootleg above. Purple Chick has both shows in better quality and by the intro to Yesterday where George says "LP" twice, its obvious this and Contact Records Live in Japan are both from June 30, 1966. A second example is John introducing Nowhere Man. He says, "I never know these things" on June 30th, 1966 and not on July 1st and that settles it for me!! :) I listened for the introduction words of band members and compared. Not easy to do this when the band barely talked and when they did, they often said the same thing in both shows!! Live in Japan - Contact Records - same as above but sounds a bit better. Original silver disc. The Live Beatles - Document Records - Tokyo, June 30, 1966 and July 1, 1966. Original silver disc. Unsurpassed Masters. 7 cds. Volumes 3 and 4 are silver discs. 2 is a printed silver from another source but doesn't play well and looks to be a copy of a Yellow Dog disc. I have a lossless version of it on cdr so I have all 7 ready to go. Everything but the two silver discs are from HungerCity, February 2010. Vinyl to the Core. Has John Lennon singing 27 seconds of a song called "Jerusalaim." 3 cds. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! A Hard Day's Night - Odeon Records - Original stereo version of A Hard Day's Night plus bonus tracks. Original silver disc. Back-Track - Appears to be a clone of a classic Beatleg that was released *before* Anthology and Yellow Dog's releases so this was the first time these outtakes were heard in such stunning quality! Perfect for casual fans as well. Original silver disc. 4 Others - Backbeat - Mix of Beatles, solo outtakes and rarities. Day Tripping - Magical Mystery Tour Remixed - Far Out Productions - Dance and lounge remixes of Beatles songs. From Penny Lane To Abbey Road - Luna Records - Compilation of outtakes. No. 3 Abbey Road NW8 - Adam VIII - Abbey Road outtakes + Paul in the studio with Donovan. ---- John Lennon I'm The Greatest. 1973. Vinyl -------- In the summer of 2010, I began collecting vinyl. There are collectors with superb equipment and technical skills who make incredible rips from their vinyl collections. Even if I had a record player, I would never be able to reproduce the sounds like these "wizards" do. They are usually in 24/96 format - which is better than cd quality. I've downloaded them from Demonoid and Avaxhome.ws. I store them on dvd - 24/96 rips are much larger than a cd (which is 16/44) but a few can fit on a dvd. These are amazing remnants of the past. They don't make vinyl like they used to! And even when they do, its taken from a digital master. I'm not downloading everything I come across - just the old classics and world music. Vinyl #1 - Stan Getz Jazz Samba, Getz/Gilberto and Getz Au Go Go. The first two are 24/96 and Getz Au Go Go is 16/44.
